Assessment Teams Using Family Support Workers for Short Term Work

This protocol sets out the process for case allocation to Family Support Workers based in the Community Assessment Teams when it is identified that some short term work would prevent cases being transferred into Family Support Teams and would facilitate closure, exit through a Team Around the Child/Family (TAC/TAF) or step down to the Early Intervention Service.

  • Following an assessment the Team Manager or Assistant Team Manager may identify a need for short term work. This work needs to be completed within 6 to 8 weeks;
  • The case is sent to the Senior Practitioner for Assessments who allocates it to a Family Support Worker and discusses and agrees the work plan;
  • A Child In Need Plan is opened and forms the basis for any work undertaken;
  • The Senior Practitioner supervises the Family Support Workers and is responsible for their work;
  • On completion of the identified work cases will be:
    • Closed via a TAC/TAF;
    • Transferred to Family Support Teams;
    • Transferred to the Early Intervention Service via a Step-Down meeting.
  • Should any safeguarding concerns arise during this period then cases should transfer immediately into the Family Support Team;
  • A FWi report should be used to review cases being managed through this process paying particular attention to timeliness as this will be essential to facilitate workflow and throughput.
