- Supervision files must be kept either electronically or in hard copy. Each file must be a single entity, not separate documents filed across various storage systems.
- Supervision files are confidential to the supervisor, supervisee and supervisor’s line manager. They must be retained for twenty-five years.
- Supervision has three main focuses: workload management (including case-management); professional development; support
- Discussions/decisions about cases must be recorded on the case-supervision record and kept on the supervision file and also entered on the appropriate child’s file in case notes, marked as supervision, and approved by the supervisor.
- Frequency of supervision: is recommended to be monthly, unless circumstances indicate that intervals between sessions should be shorter (e.g. NQSWs) or longer (e.g. Children’s Care Service).
- Staff should have a schedule of supervision sessions so that they are booked in advance.
- Duration of supervision: recommended to be 90 minutes, although this is dependent on staff member’s length of experience, level of competence and workload.
- Supervision files are the subject of Ofsted inspection and must be kept up to date.
- Supervision files are audited at random within the QA audit framework.
